Gutters may not be the most glamorous feature of your home, but they are one of the most important. A properly installed gutter system protects your foundation, prevents erosion, keeps your fascia and soffit from rotting, and manages the thousands of gallons of water that flow off your roof during a typical North Texas rain season. At Greenleaf Roofing, we have been installing and replacing gutter systems throughout Plano and the DFW area since 2013, and we have learned that the difference between gutters that work flawlessly and gutters that cause problems comes down to proper sizing, quality materials, and expert installation technique.

Why Gutters Matter More Than You Think

Many homeowners underestimate the volume of water a roof collects. During a moderate one-inch rainfall, a 2,000-square-foot roof sheds approximately 1,250 gallons of water. During the intense storms common in North Texas, where two or three inches can fall in an hour, that same roof is shedding water at a rate of several thousand gallons per hour. Without gutters to capture and redirect that water, it cascades off the eaves and impacts the ground directly around your foundation.

Over time, this uncontrolled water runoff causes a chain of problems. Soil erosion undermines the foundation, leading to settlement cracks and structural issues. Constant moisture against the siding and fascia promotes wood rot and invites termites. Splash-back stains the lower portions of the exterior walls. Saturated soil around the foundation can lead to hydrostatic pressure against basement walls, causing leaks and potential structural failure. A well-designed gutter system prevents all of these issues by controlling where the water goes.

Types of Gutter Systems

Seamless Gutters

Seamless gutters are the gold standard for residential gutter installation in the DFW area. They are custom-fabricated on site from continuous coil stock using a portable roll-forming machine, which means each gutter run is a single piece with no joints except at corners and downspout outlets. The absence of seams dramatically reduces the potential for leaks, which is the primary advantage over sectional gutters.

Seamless gutters are available in aluminum, copper, and steel. Aluminum is by far the most popular choice, accounting for over 80 percent of residential gutter installations in the DFW market. It offers the best balance of weight, corrosion resistance, color options, and cost.

Sectional Gutters

Sectional gutters are assembled from pre-formed sections, typically 10 feet long, that are joined together with connectors and sealed with gutter sealant. They are available at most home improvement stores and are popular for do-it-yourself installation. However, every joint is a potential leak point, and the sealant at these joints degrades over time. For homes larger than a small single-story structure, we strongly recommend seamless gutters over sectional systems for long-term reliability.

Gutter Guards and Screens

Gutter guards or leaf screens are supplementary products designed to keep debris out of the gutter trough while allowing water to enter. They come in many configurations, including mesh screens, solid covers with surface tension slots, foam inserts, and brush-style filters. While no gutter guard system is completely maintenance-free, quality guards can significantly reduce the frequency of gutter cleaning and prevent clogs that lead to overflows and ice dams.

Choosing the Right Gutter Size

Gutter sizing is not a one-size-fits-all decision. The correct gutter size depends on the roof area draining into each gutter run, the roof pitch, and the maximum rainfall intensity expected in your area.

5-Inch Gutters

The standard 5-inch K-style gutter is adequate for most residential applications where the roof area draining to a single gutter run does not exceed approximately 5,500 square feet on a standard-slope roof. This size handles the majority of homes in the DFW area, particularly single-story and moderate-sized two-story homes.

6-Inch Gutters

Six-inch gutters are recommended for homes with large roof areas, steep pitches, or multiple roof planes that converge and concentrate water flow. A 6-inch gutter holds approximately 40 percent more water than a 5-inch gutter and is significantly less likely to overflow during intense DFW thunderstorms. For two-story homes with steep roofs, we often recommend 6-inch gutters as a margin of safety even when calculations might technically allow 5-inch.

Downspout Sizing

Downspouts must be sized to match the gutter capacity. A 5-inch gutter typically uses 2x3-inch rectangular downspouts or 3-inch round downspouts. A 6-inch gutter should use 3x4-inch rectangular downspouts or 4-inch round downspouts. The number and placement of downspouts are equally important. As a general rule, we install one downspout for every 30 to 40 linear feet of gutter run, and we always place downspouts at the lowest point of each gutter section.

The Professional Installation Process

Here is what to expect when Greenleaf Roofing installs a gutter system on your home.

Step 1: Assessment and Planning. We begin by examining the roof design, measuring all eave and rake runs, identifying downspout locations, and evaluating the existing fascia condition. We calculate the drainage area for each gutter section to determine the correct gutter and downspout sizing. We also assess the grade around the foundation to plan downspout discharge locations that direct water away from the home.

Step 2: Fascia Preparation. The fascia board must be in sound condition to support the gutter system. Any rotted, warped, or damaged fascia is repaired or replaced before gutter installation begins. We also verify that the fascia is straight and level, shimming where necessary to establish the correct slope for water flow.

Step 3: Gutter Fabrication. Our portable roll-forming machine is set up on site, and the gutters are formed from continuous aluminum coil stock in the color selected by the homeowner. Each section is cut to exact length, matching the measurements taken during assessment. Seamless fabrication means fewer joints, fewer potential leak points, and a cleaner appearance.

Step 4: Hanger Installation. We install hidden hangers spaced at a maximum of 24 inches on center. Hidden hangers are stronger and more attractive than the exposed spike-and-ferrule systems used in older installations. The hangers establish the proper slope toward each downspout, typically a quarter-inch of drop for every 10 feet of gutter length. This gentle slope is enough to keep water moving toward the outlets without being visually noticeable.

Step 5: Gutter Mounting. The fabricated gutter sections are lifted into position and secured to the hangers. At inside and outside corners, pre-formed miters are installed and sealed with high-grade polyurethane gutter sealant. End caps are applied and sealed at every termination point.

Step 6: Downspout Installation. Downspout outlets are cut into the gutter at the planned locations. Downspouts are assembled from straight sections and elbows, secured to the wall with brackets at regular intervals, and terminated with extensions or splash blocks that direct water at least four feet away from the foundation.

Step 7: Testing. After installation is complete, we run water through the entire system to verify proper flow, check all joints and connections for leaks, and confirm that downspouts discharge correctly. Any issues identified during testing are addressed immediately.

Gutter Maintenance Guidelines

Even the best gutter system requires regular maintenance to perform at its peak.

  • Clean gutters twice a year: The two most important cleaning times in the DFW area are late fall (after the leaves have dropped) and late spring (after the tree pollen and seed season). If your home has significant tree coverage, you may need to clean more frequently.
  • Inspect for proper slope: Over time, hangers can shift or sag, causing water to pool in the gutter instead of flowing toward the downspouts. Check for standing water after a rain and have hangers adjusted if pooling is observed.
  • Check downspout connections: Verify that all downspout sections are securely connected and that the ground-level extensions are in place and directing water away from the foundation.
  • Seal any leaks promptly: If you notice water dripping from joints or corners, apply gutter sealant as soon as possible. Small leaks that are ignored will worsen over time and can cause fascia damage.
  • Monitor during heavy rain: Watch your gutters during a heavy downpour. If water is overflowing the gutter edge or spilling behind the gutter, there may be a blockage, sizing issue, or slope problem that needs professional attention.

Signs You Need Gutter Replacement

Gutters do not last forever. Here are the indicators that it is time for new gutters:

  1. Frequent leaks at multiple joints despite repeated repairs
  2. Visible sagging or pulling away from the fascia
  3. Rust holes or significant corrosion on steel gutters
  4. Dents and damage from hail or impact that impede water flow
  5. Peeling paint or orange discoloration indicating oxidation on aluminum gutters
  6. Water damage to the fascia board behind the gutters
  7. Foundation erosion or staining despite gutters being present
  8. The existing gutters are sectional and more than 15 years old
